Some Basic Principles I Live By

ON BELIEVING

Faith, if proven, is called fact.

“Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.”
– Buddha Gotama

“Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.”
– Buddha Gotama

“If science proves some belief of Buddhism wrong, then Buddhism will have to change.”
– Tenzin Gyatso, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama

“Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.”
– Marcus Aurelius

ON LIVING

Life goes on. Don’t get stuck.

Carpe diem. Seize the day.

“This too shall pass.”
– Anonymous

“Jika Anda lunak pada diri Anda, maka kehidupan akan keras kepada Anda. Sebaliknya, jika Anda keras pada diri Anda, maka kehidupan akan lunak kepada Anda.” (If you are being soft to yourself, life will be hard to you. If you are being hard to yourself, life will be soft to you.)
– Andrie Wongso

“Do not live every day as if it were your last. Live every day as if it were your first.”
– Paulo Coelho

Nothing happens twice. Enjoy every second.

“No one saves us but ourselves. No one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path.”
– Buddha Gotama

Paying the Right Price
– Paulo Coelho

ON THINKING & HABIT

“There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.”
– William Shakespeare

“An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind.”
– Mahatma Gandhi

“The only thing that is certain is the uncertainty itself.”
– Anonymous

“You can tell more about a person by what he says about others than you can by what others say about him.”
– Leo Aikman

“Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habit. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.”
– Lao Tzu

“Chance favors only the prepared mind.”
– Louis Pasteur

Compare yourself to others only if by doing so, you are motivated to be (or to do) better than what you are (or do) currently.

ON CHARACTER & PERSONALITY

“You are what you believe yourself to be.”
– Paulo Coelho

“Be yourself; everybody else is already taken.”
– Oscar Wilde

Confidence: against majority to be yourself.

We are both the best friend and the worst enemy of our own self.

“One’s dignity may be assaulted, vandalized and cruelly mocked, but it can never be taken away unless it is surrendered.”
– Michael J. Fox

“You find things and you lose things, but you never lose your honesty.”
– Ferenc Kozma, a 52 y.o. homeless Hungarian
